These floral decorations were made at the classroom of California Flower Art Academy by our students under the instruction of our teacher. The left side decoration is called pomander, flower ball or kissing ball. This ball shaped arrangement is usually held by a bride at a wedding party. Sometimes it is displayed on the table as a centerpiece decoration. The right one is a design made on the hand-made "container" made of flower stems. Actually this "container" is just like a plate on which flowers are decorated. Both of these arrangements are done without using any container or vase and displayed on the table. From time to time we accept students who learned floral designs at a community college before they joined our school. According to such students, most of the time at a college classroom was spent for learning theory and an instructor could not spare sufficient time for teaching students how to make floral decorations. Lessons at community colleges are done with lecture system and not practice oriented. Namely classes at a community college are apt to lack practical hands on training for how to make floral arrangements. Instructors who teach at community colleges are well talented and educated and they have very decent skills of floral arranging. In this sense this is not a fault of such instructors. And our students and our school know about such fact and we clearly understand such situation. The lack of practical technical training at community colleges MAY happen seemingly because of too many students at a classroom (in most cases, there are 20 or more students per class and one instructor teaches such many students) which makes it impossible to do hands on training of ONE ON ONE instructions. Since our school is pretty much PRACTICE and HANDS ON TRAINING oriented, we can offer "After Care Service" to students who already took lectures at community colleges.

The Ikebana arrangements introduced in this section were made by a student and instructor of California Flower Art Academy. We picked up above arrangements only because both of the designs use "Kenzan" and "Suiban" actually used for Ikebana Arrangement. (For details about these terminologies, continue reading). Ikebana arrangement uses different type of tools as shown below. The left one below is called FLORAL FOAM (famous brand is "OASIS") which is used for European or American style of floral arrangements. The center one (below) is what is called "Kenzan" used for Japanese Ikebana Arrangement. This is also called Needle Point Holder. If the word of "Kenzan" is written in Chinese character, it means "Sword Mountain" (Each Chinese character has its own meaning). There are so many needles mounted on the iron pad which is so heavy and good for holding flowers/flower stems. In the case of Floral Foam, it is made of chemical stuff and easy to use. Stems of flowers can be easily inserted into Floral Foam. The right one below is called "Suiban" which is a flat type container used for Ikebana Arrangement.

If you do not have any vase or container designed for floral designs, you can use a dish plate or some other container you can find in your house. Some people like to use dish plates better than flower arranging containers. From Elementary to Intermediate, From Intermediate to Advanced Course

No matter what kind of floral arrangement you learn, Japanese Ikebana or European floral designs, wedding or funeral decorations, people who are keenly interested in mastering flower arranging skills are apt to step up from elementary to intermediate level, from intermediate to advanced level and from advanced level eventually to instructor level. Depending upon the needs and requirements each student has, California Flower Art Academy always try to help students enhance and brush up on their flower arranging skills. Take European floral designs for instance, many students start from Introductory Trial Budget Program. Many students continue to learn floral designs by rolling over (transferring) to Fresh Flower Arrangement Elementary Course. Some students temporarily stop learning. A few weeks or a few months later, they come back to our school to resume taking lessons by enrolling in the Elementary Course. In this case, credits already earned from Introductory Program are counted for them to complete the Elementary Course. Some students who complete the Elementary Course proceed to Intermediate Course. Limited number of enthusiastic students go up to Advanced Course and Instructor Course. The same situation can be found in Ikebana Programs and also Wedding Floral Arrangement Programs. If they feel that they have achieved their goals, they feel motivated to challenge higher level of programs. Our school prepares containers for making floral arrangements at the classroom. The fee for these containers are included in the lesson fee announced on the internet. Our students sometimes want to bring their own vases or containers so that they can use them for making their designs during a lesson. Depending on the situation, if our instructor feels that their own containers can fit the floral decorations which are scheduled for the next lesson, they can use their own vases. The photos in this page show floral arrangements using their own containers. Since we did not pay special attention to make the arrangement background neat and beautiful, it does not look very impressive. However flower designs made by students look pretty good. These arrangements can be displayed in the office, hotel halls and restaurants as well. It is fully up to you where they should be displayed.

Historically Ikebana as well as tea ceremony was considered one of typical Japanese traditional manners which should be earned by young ladies before getting married. Japanese women learned not only the skill of arranging flowers but also the manner as a woman through learning Ikebana skills from an instructor. The same can be said when learning tea ceremony as well. They usually spent many years to master this Japanese traditional art. Although the skill of Ikebana arrangement is not useful for doing floral business, such as running a floral shop, working for a florist as a floral designer or engage in wedding floral decoration in the United States, it looks like there are uncountable number of fans who love Ikebana. This Japanese traditional floral art has been very popular in Japan although many Japanese ladies now learn European floral art.

Since we limit number of students to 6 per class, you can get interactive instruction from our instructor who has an official license of Ikebana instructor certified in Japan and has over 30 year experience in teaching Ikebana arrangement. Although European (or American) style floral arrangements use floral foam (oasis) to hold flowers and a regular kind of vase, Ikebana arrangement often uses what is called "Kenzan" which is a needlepoint holder to hold flowers. This is made of iron and can be used forever (not disposable). Since the function of Kenzan is to hold flowers/flower stems in the container, it is very heavy. As for a vase, Ikebana often uses another kind of container called "Suiban" which is a flat type of container specifically designed for Ikebana arrangement. (see the picture in the right)

During middle ages and Renaissance in France,there were small cases which held aromatic elements or scented ingredients. People believed that carrying such scents would protect from disease. The pictures in this page show wedding corsages which were made by our student under the direction of the instructor at the classroom of California Flower Art Academy. There are a few kinds of corsages used for wedding party. The most popular one is called "wrist corsage" which is mounted on a bride's wrist (The photo left below). Another one is wedding dress corsage (photo left upper). When a bride wears a wedding dress, this corsage is usually put on the left side chest. Sometimes bride or groom holds a corsage (not on the dress or not on the wrist). When a bridegroom is dressed in tuxedo, such tuxedo often wears a corsage. Easy Access to Ikebana Arrangement Elementary Course

We are pleased to introduce our Brand New Program featuring Ikebana Arrangement. This program is offered at $98 including flower materials, KENZAN (needlepoint flower holder) and SUIBAN (flat type container specifically designed for Ikebana Arrangement). You can take a lesson from a well experienced Japanese Instructor who got a license and certification in Japan. Ikebana is part of Japanese traditional cultures. This arts requires even more profound and delicate sense and skills in its arrangement compared with a regular kind of flower arrangement. Although the skill, technique and the way of arranging Ikebana is usually not utilized for typical business oriented floral decorations such as wedding or funeral flower arrangement or display and decoration at hotels etc in USA, many people still have keen interest in this particular Japanese floral art. Not only the skill and way of decorations but also tools, utensils, supplies and containers used for Ikebana are of a different kind compared with regular floral designs prevailing in Europe and USA. For Ikebana Arrangement, they use what is called "KENZAN" which is a needlepoint holder for holding flowers and flower stems. KENZAN is made of metal and it has tremendous number of needles. Due to its function and also the nature of material, it is heavy and not disposable. This is the biggest difference compared with "OASIS" which is used for a regular kind of floral arrangement. OASIS is made of chemical foam and it is very light and disposable. For holding flowers, flower stems are inserted into OASIS. KENZAN is said to be more difficult to use for floral arrangement compared with OASIS. Another difference in utensil is a container/vase. For Ikebana arrangement, they often use flat container called "SUIBAN" which is designed specifically for Ikebana Arrangement and totally different from a regular kind of vase. Additional difference can be found in the history and a life style behind Ikebana arrangement. Most of young ladies who grew up in a decent level of society in Japan were required to earn the skill of Ikebana arrangement before getting married. Namely Ikebana was considered one of mandatory subjects young women should learn before getting married until around 40-50 years ago. By making the best use of Ikebana skills they learned before marriage, they could make interior floral decoration at home after getting married. Nowadays in Japan, European style of contemporary floral design (In Japan they call it just "Flower Arrangement" which does not mean IKEBANA but contemporary floral designs) is more popular although Ikebana used to be mainstream until about 25 to 30 years ago. By knowing above situation, if you are interested in Ikebana and want to acquire skills for making Ikebana arrangement, we are more than happy to help you by educating you based on hands on training or person to person instructions. Official Certificate Issued by California Flower Art Academy
Students who have completed all the requirement of each course (except for Introductory Trial Budget Program) and passed the simple internal examination qualify to get the Official Certificate from California Flower Art Academy. The
fee for issuing certificates is not included in the fee of tuition and flower materials. If you need the certificate, please let our instructor know about it. The students who have successfully completed Fresh Flower Arrangement Instructor Course qualifies to use the title of Certified Floral Designer (licensed by California Flower Art Academy).
Students who understand Japanese Language and have completed a certain level of training at our school can take the license examination by Flower Decorators Association (Japan). Since our school is accredited by this well established organization, students can take this examination at our class room. Since all the written examinations are done in Japanese, it is mandatory to understand Japanese language for challenging the license of this association. Very high level of flower arranging skills is required to pass this examination by the said association.
Students who have completed all the requirements for Ikebana Arts qualify to get the official certificate (written in Japanese using a wooden plaque) from the Japanese Headquarters of Ikebana Association to which our school belongs. In order to become a certified Ikebana Instructor, very high level of skills is required for which purpose, students need to take a long term training. Again the fee for getting such certificate is separately charged.
Every lesson and training is done according to the high level guide line of education required by the Japanese Associations (not only ordinary floral designs but also for Japanese Ikebana Arts).
The certificate for completing each course is issued by our own organization (California Flower Art Academy) based on our own judgment. Therefore it is not affected by any judgement by the Japanese Associations, which makes it much less difficult for students to obtain certificates at our school.

over the world. The biggest difference between Ikebana Arts (typical traditional
Japanese Flower Arrangement) and Contemporary Floral Design is the way of making
designs. Ikebana Arts uses a special metal plate with needles called "KENZAN" which holds flower stems firmly while contemporary floral design uses soft chemical materials (looks like sponge) called "OASIS" (inherent brand name) again for holding stems and flower materials. It is said to be easier to use OASIS than using KENZAN. You can insert stems from every angle to OASIS while KENZAN can accept only from the upper side, which makes it a little bit difficult to make the best use of KENZAN.
Most of people learn Typical Japanese Traditional Ikebana Arts for understanding Japanese floral art culture while contemporary floral design is popular among people who wish to make flower arrangement easily and utilize its skills for

The above picture shows one of typical decoupage arts framed in Shadow Box. This is usualy called "Shadow Box Arts" in Japan. It is totally different from
what is called shadow box in the USA. The "shadow box arts" in the USA often means any kind of picture (even sportman or animal) framed in shadow box. In Japan, the picures framed in the Shadow Box must have multi-layer pictures which must look like 3D arts which has a porcelain painting. And therefore it has 3 Dimensional (3D) touch and feeling.

We are pleased to introduce our Brand New Program featuring Ikebana Arrangement. This program is offered at $98 including flower materials, KENZAN (needlepoint flower holder) and SUIBAN (flat type container specifically designed for Ikebana Arrangement). You can take a lesson from a well experienced Japanese Instructor who got a license and certification in Japan. Ikebana is part of Japanese traditional cultures. This arts requires even more profound and delicate sense and skills in its arrangement compared with a regular kind of flower arrangement. Although the skill, technique and the way of arranging Ikebana is usually not utilized for typical business oriented floral decorations such as wedding or funeral flower arrangement or display and decoration at hotels etc in USA, many people still have keen interest in this particular Japanese floral art. Not only the skill and way of decorations but also tools, utensils, supplies and containers used for Ikebana are of a different kind compared with regular floral designs prevailing in Europe and USA. For Ikebana Arrangement, they use what is called "KENZAN" which is a needlepoint holder for holding flowers and flower stems. KENZAN is made of metal and it has tremendous number of needles. Due to its function and also the nature of material, it is heavy and not disposable. This is the biggest difference compared with "OASIS" which is used for a regular kind of floral arrangement. OASIS is made of chemical foam and it is 
very light and disposable. For holding flowers, flower stems are inserted into OASIS. KENZAN is said to be more difficult to use for floral arrangement compared with OASIS. Another difference in utensil is a container/vase. For Ikebana arrangement, they often use flat container called "SUIBAN" which is designed specifically for Ikebana Arrangement and totally different from a regular kind of vase. Additional difference can be found in the history and a life style behind Ikebana arrangement. Most of young ladies who grew up in a decent level of society in Japan were required to earn the skill of Ikebana arrangement before getting married. Namely Ikebana was considered one of mandatory subjects young women should learn before getting married until around 40-50 years ago. By making the best use of Ikebana skills they learned before marriage, they could make interior floral decoration at home after getting married. Nowadays in Japan, European style of contemporary floral design (In Japan they call it just "Flower Arrangement" which does not mean IKEBANA but contemporary floral designs) is more popular although Ikebana used to be mainstream until about 25 to 30 years ago.
